Fred Orban
Hunter Gatherers was founded by Fred Orban, an avid conservationist who has played a vital role in protecting and increasing the population of the previously threatened African Black Oystercatcher.
He has led remarkable local discoveries, including ancient elephant bones in the dunes of Springerbaai and was part of the team that uncovered two Portuguese cannons – likely lost from a ship centuries ago, in the town now known today as Kanon. Even today, Fred shares his passion by discussing conservation topics every Thursday on local radio. He remains active and engaged well into his 80s.

Fred pioneered hiking and slackpacking trails in the Garden Route years ago, creating one of the world’s most well-known slackpacking experiences. After selling that venture, he recently decided to develop a new hike focused on the fascinating history of hunter gatherers along the South African coastline.
At the same time, Fred’s grandson, Cameron Orban, was developing his own hiking experience on the magnificent Wild Coast. Together, Fred and Cameron joined forces to create two unique hiking adventures that highlight wildlife, marine life, and the rich history and cultures of South African Hunter Gatherers.
